Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert in India's far north, between the Karakoram and the Great Himalaya. It has been a Union Territory since 2019, and its main town, Leh, stands at about 3,500 metres.
Ladakh takes in the Indus valley and its monasteries, such as Hemis, Thiksey and Lamayuru, and the sand dunes and villages of Nubra. It also holds the high lakes of Changthang, including Pangong and Tso Moriri, the Zanskar valley, Kargil and the Aryan Valley. Its Buddhist and Muslim communities keep a calendar of monastery festivals, from Losar to Hemis and many more.
The best time to visit Ladakh is May to September, when the roads are open. Winter brings the frozen Zanskar river and the best chance of seeing snow leopards. Every visitor needs a day or two in Leh to acclimatise before going higher.
