Impact in Action is our CSR travel and community engagement service. It is for organisations whose employees, partners or leaders travel to see, support or join work on the ground. That covers field immersions, rural engagements and programmes that return to the same place over several years.
Impact in Action
01
A field immersion takes a group to the place where a programme happens: a rural school, a self-help group, a health centre or a conservation project. The point of the visit is the work at the destination, not the experience of the people visiting. We plan the travel, the stay and the time on site around that.
We arrange the visit with the community's agreement and on dates that suit them. A school visit in exam week, or a village visit in the middle of the harvest, costs the hosts more than it gives them.
02
Much of this work already happens on our ordinary journeys, wherever it is practical. Travellers visit rural schools, NGOs and self-help groups, with an interaction arranged beforehand. They carry study materials, story books and stationery with them. In remote Himalayan villages, they carry general medicines and donate them to the local primary health centre.
In a school, travellers show the children on a map which part of India they come from. They teach a sentence of their own language and learn a few sentences of the local one. Some teach a skill they have, such as a song or a maths trick.
Some travellers have gone further on their own. They have sponsored a child's schooling up to class 10, funded a girls' toilet in a school and donated books to the libraries we help set up in villages. Those libraries sit inside homes, school buildings and public buildings, with local support.
A CSR programme takes the same approach and gives it a budget, a plan and a group.
03
The strongest programmes support work that already exists near the places a group travels through. A cause chosen from a list, far from anywhere the group will go, rarely gets a second visit. Ecotourism shows how uneven this can be. Whether ecotourism in India benefits local communities depends on who is paid. The people who give up the most are not always the people a visitor's money reaches.
04
The work that lasts is the work that comes back. A library needs books every year. A school needs the same faces to return. We plan programmes that bring a group, or several groups, back to the same place across seasons, so the relationship outlives a single visit.
05
We report what was done, where, with whom and what it cost. We do not claim results we have not measured, and we do not describe a single visit as lasting change. A plain account is more useful to a CSR committee than a glossy one, and it holds up when somebody asks.
The work sits inside how we plan every journey, an approach set out in what Care-Based Travel means in practice. To start, tell us the cause or region your organisation supports, the size of the group and the time you have.
