Meghalaya, the abode of clouds, is a hill state in Northeast India made up of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills. Its capital is Shillong. The Khasi, Pnar and Garo, its three main communities, are matrilineal, with descent and property passing through women.
Mawsynram and Cherrapunjee, on its southern edge, are among the wettest places on earth. Travellers come for the living root bridges grown by Khasi villagers and the waterfalls and caves of the plateau. There is the clear Umngot river at Dawki, Mawlynnong, the Jaintia Hills around Jowai, the Garo Hills and much more. Shad Suk Mynsiem, Behdeinkhlam, Wangala and many more festivals mark the year.
The best time to visit Meghalaya is October to April, when the weather is clear. The monsoon, from June to September, brings the waterfalls to full force.
