Assam is the gateway state of Northeast India, spread across the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys and bordered by seven Indian states, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Its main city is Guwahati, on the banks of the Brahmaputra.
Assam holds two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Kaziranga and Manas National Parks. Kaziranga is home to about two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos. The state also has Majuli, one of the world's largest river islands, with its Vaishnavite satras. There are the Ahom monuments of Sivasagar, the Kamakhya temple, and the tea gardens of Upper Assam, which grow more than half of India's tea.
The best time to visit Assam is November to April, when the national parks are open and the weather is dry and mild. The three Bihus, Ali-Ai-Ligang of the Mising and many more festivals mark the farming year.
