Uttarakhand is a Himalayan state in northern India, divided into two regions, Garhwal and Kumaon. Its capital is Dehradun. The Ganga and the Yamuna both rise here, and the state is known as Devbhoomi, the land of the gods.
Travellers come for the Char Dham pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, and for Rishikesh and Haridwar. There are the hill towns of Nainital, Almora, Binsar and Munsiyari, Jim Corbett National Park, India's first national park, and much more. The Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi National Parks are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Phool Dei, Harela, the Nanda Devi Raj Jat and many more festivals mark the hill calendar.
The best time to visit Uttarakhand is March to June and September to November. The Char Dham temples open in late April or May and close in October or November.
