Spiti

Spiti is a high cold desert valley in Himachal Pradesh, on the border with Tibet, in the rain shadow of the Great Himalaya. Its main town, Kaza, stands at about 3,800 metres, and the villages above it are among the highest in India.

Travellers come for the monasteries of Key, Tabo and Dhankar, the villages of Kibber, Langza and Komik, the Pin Valley National Park, Chandratal lake and much more. Tabo monastery was founded in 996. Snow leopards, ibex and blue sheep live in the mountains around the valley.

The best time to visit Spiti is June to October, when both roads into the valley are usually open. Winter is harsh, with heavy snow, and is the season for snow leopard sightings. The altitude means every visitor needs time to acclimatise.

Pollen Dots plans customised journeys anywhere in Spiti, with homestays and guides from the valley. Browse the journeys and stories below, or write to us to plan a journey around what you want to see.
