Western Ghats

The Western Ghats, also called the Sahyadri, are a mountain range that runs about 1,600 kilometres along India's west coast. They pass through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and their highest peak is Anamudi in Kerala, at 2,695 metres.

The range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's richest biodiversity hotspots, home to more than 300 globally threatened species. The Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri rivers all rise here. Travellers come for the coffee estates of Coorg and Chikmagalur, the rainforest of Agumbe, Wayanad, Munnar, Periyar, the Nilgiris, Kodaikanal, Mahabaleshwar, Amboli, Dudhsagar and much more. The neelakurinji flower carpets the Munnar hills once every twelve years.

The best time to visit the Western Ghats is October to March. The monsoon, from June to September, brings the waterfalls and the greenest hills, along with heavy rain. Treks inside reserve forests and tiger reserves need forest department permission.
