Goa

Goa is India's smallest state by area, on the Konkan coast of the Arabian Sea. It was ruled by Portugal until 1961, and that history still shows in its churches, houses, food and festivals. Its capital is Panaji.

Travellers come for the beaches of North and South Goa and the Churches and Convents of Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inland are the river islands of Divar and Chorao, and the spice plantations, waterfalls and sanctuaries of the Western Ghats. Carnival, Shigmo, São João and many village feasts fill the calendar.

The best time to visit Goa is November to February, when the weather is dry and pleasant. The monsoon, from June to September, turns the hinterland green and quiet.
