A packing list for Goa has to cover a beach, a church and a rainforest in the same small bag. Four of the state's sanctuaries sit along the Western Ghats edge and cover roughly 750 square kilometres, so the inland day is a forest day rather than a longer beach day. Pack for sun, for covered shoulders and for wet ground, and the rest is light.
The state is small enough that you will do all three in one trip without meaning to. The preparation guide for travelling in India handles the bookings, documents and offline maps that sit above packing.
Light cotton, sun cover and one set of clothes that covers shoulders and knees. The season is dry and warm by day and mild at night, so almost nothing heavy earns its space.
Closed shoes, long trousers and insect cover. Mhadei, Bhagwan Mahavir with Mollem, Netravali and Cotigao are forest rather than parkland, and the ground is uneven and often damp.
Covered shoulders and knees, and shoes you can slip off where it is asked. The Churches and Convents of Goa are a World Heritage property and they are also active places of worship, which is the part visitors in beachwear forget.
A light cotton stole handles it without a second outfit, and the same cloth is useful in the sun. The buildings are cool inside and the walk between them is not, so something you can put on and take off is better than a change of clothes. The same rule works at the Hindu temples inland, where shoes come off at the door and the floor is hot by midday.
Everything on the inland half of the list. June to September is wet, the forest routes close, and the Dudhsagar jeep safari is suspended from around mid June until after October.
Alcohol. Drinking in open public places including beaches was made an offence on 31 January 2019. The amendment to the Goa Tourist Place (Protection and Maintenance) Act carries imprisonment of up to three months.
Cooking in the open is covered by the same amendment, so a stove or a portable grill is the other thing to leave behind. A beach umbrella is worth carrying instead, because shade on the southern beaches is thin outside the shack line. Glass is a separate problem on beaches where turtles nest, and four beaches are notified nesting sites. Our six day slow coastal journey through Goa is planned around which beaches those are. Journeys Just for You builds the same around your own dates.
Rarely. The nights between December and February are mild rather than cold, and a single light layer covers them. The one place you may want more is an early start into the sanctuaries, where the forest holds the night temperature longer than the coast does.
Covered shoulders and knees at the Old Goa churches, which are active places of worship as well as a World Heritage property. A light stole or a shirt carried in the day bag is enough. The same applies at Hindu temples inland, where shoes come off outside.
No. Drinking in open public places including beaches is an offence under a 2019 amendment to the state tourist places law, which carries imprisonment of up to three months. Buying and drinking in a bar, restaurant, shack or your own room is not affected.
A rain shell rather than an umbrella, footwear that survives being wet, quick-drying clothes and a waterproof pouch for a phone. Leave the inland plans flexible, because the Dudhsagar jeep safari is suspended from around mid June until after October.
