Anyone planning a trip to Gujarat books the Rann of Kutch first and finds out about the two separate permits afterwards. The White Rann sits in an international border area and needs a permit from the Kutch district administration, and a dry state means a visitor needs a second one. Gir shuts for four months and the salt flat floods every monsoon, and both dates are fixed.

Gujarat asks for four decisions before a booking: the season, the two permits, the four months Gir is shut, and the distances between Kutch and the rest of the state. July sits in the middle of the monsoon, when the Arabian Sea floods the Rann, so there is no white desert to see. I plan Gujarat backwards from those dates because none of them moves, and the wider guide to preparing for travelling in India sets out what sits above them.

Do you need a permit to visit the White Rann in Kutch?

Yes, for the salt flats. The White Rann lies inside an international border area, and going past the Bhirandiyara checkpost needs a permit issued by the Kutch district administration.

The charge is 100 rupees for a person above twelve and 50 rupees for a child between six and twelve. A child up to five goes in free, and there is no charge for the vehicle. Applications run through rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in, and the manual counter sits at Bhirandiyara village on the road out of Bhuj. Carry an original government photo ID, which a foreign visitor replaces with a passport.

Three details are often printed wrong.

  • The address most guides still print is the old one. The Collector launched the first online permit on a .com address in November 2018. The government portal is the one to use now.
  • Kala Dungar is a different matter. It sits in the same border belt and your ID is checked at the Khavda post, and sources disagree on whether the paid White Rann permit is needed for the hill itself. Carry both and the question does not arise.
  • A hotel booking is not a permit, and a tent city ticket is not one either.

Can you buy alcohol in Gujarat as a visitor?

Yes, with a permit, and the state stays dry for anybody without one. A person arriving from outside India counts as a tourist and pays nothing. A person travelling in from another Indian state counts as a visitor and pays 100 rupees.

The application runs through eps.gujarat.gov.in. It asks for residence proof and age proof from outside Gujarat, front and back. It also wants a boarding pass or a confirmed train ticket in PDF, dated within four days of arrival, plus a temporary Gujarat address. A hotel stay certificate satisfies the last one. Every uploaded file has to be under 200 kilobytes.

An Aadhaar card will not get you the permit. The proof has to show an address outside Gujarat, and Aadhaar is not on the accepted list. For an Indian non-resident the permit lasts the length of the stay or thirty days, whichever ends first.

When is the best time to plan a trip to Gujarat?

November to March. Gujarat Tourism gives that window for Gir, and the Rann needs the same months, because the floodwater recedes around October and the salt crust takes the dry months to harden.

Rann Utsav runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027 at Dhordo, on the edge of the Great Rann. Bhuj is the gateway and the tent city is about three hours away by road. The full moon windows this season fall on 23 to 25 November, 22 to 24 December, 21 to 23 January and 19 to 21 February.

Those four windows are when rooms go first. A festival pulls a crowd into a place that had almost none the week before. That pattern is the subject of how festivals temporarily reshape Indian destinations, and it decides your dates more than the weather does.

When is Gir National Park closed to visitors?

From 16 June to 15 October, every year. Gujarat Tourism prints those dates on its own Gir page, and the closure covers the monsoon.

Safari access is by permit only and the booking is entirely online, at girlion.gujarat.gov.in. There is no counter to turn up at and nobody on the ground who can produce a slot on the morning.

A trip built around lions in September is a trip built around a shut gate. The official best season for the park is November to March, which is the same window as the Rann.

What is the Rann of Kutch, and why is it white only part of the year?

The Rann is a salt flat of about 26,000 square kilometres that used to be a shallow arm of the Arabian Sea. Centuries of silt turned it into a saline mudflat, and the sea still comes back to it.

NASA records the cycle plainly. The Arabian Sea floods the Rann through the monsoon, the water recedes around October, and the area carries one of the highest annual evaporation rates anywhere near it. Salt farmers then pump saline groundwater into square fields and let the crystals come out on their own.

So the white desert is a season rather than a fixed feature. It lies under water for part of the year, and every photograph that sells it was taken in the dry months.

How do you reach Bhuj and the Rann of Kutch?

Bhuj is the gateway to Kutch and the road hub for everything north of it, Dhordo and Kala Dungar included. The tent city is roughly three hours from Bhuj by road.

The distances inside Gujarat are the part most plans underestimate. Kutch sits in the far northwest, Gir is down in southern Saurashtra, and the heritage sites are spread between Patan, Ahmedabad, Champaner and Khadir island out in the Rann.

Driving is how the state actually connects. Our eleven day journey from Kutch to central Gujarat is built as a road journey for that reason, and Journeys Just for You covers the dates that do not fit a fixed departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to enter the white desert?

It is 100 rupees for a person above twelve and 50 rupees for a child between six and twelve. A child up to five enters free and the vehicle is not charged. It covers entry to the White Rann salt flats, which lie in an international border area, and it is issued by the Kutch district administration.

Can tourists drink in Gujarat hotels?

Only with a liquor permit, which is applied for online at eps.gujarat.gov.in. A visitor from outside India pays nothing for it and a visitor from another Indian state pays 100 rupees. Without a permit the prohibition applies to everyone, including guests in a hotel.

How do you book a lion safari at Sasan Gir?

Entirely online, through girlion.gujarat.gov.in. Access is by permit only and there is no walk-in option. Book before you fix the rest of the trip, because the slots are limited and the park is shut from 16 June to 15 October.

What are the Rann Utsav 2026 to 2027 dates?

It runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027 at Dhordo in Kutch. The full moon windows are 23 to 25 November, 22 to 24 December, 21 to 23 January and 19 to 21 February. Bhuj is the gateway and the tent city is about three hours from it by road.

How many UNESCO World Heritage Sites does Gujarat have?

Four. Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park was inscribed in 2004, Rani-ki-Vav at Patan in 2014, the Historic City of Ahmadabad in 2017 and Dholavira in 2021. They are spread across four separate districts, which is why Gujarat takes longer to cover than most states.

What happens to the salt desert during the monsoon?

The Arabian Sea floods it. The Rann is a former arm of the sea, and seawater returns across it through the monsoon months before receding around October. After the water goes, salt farmers pump saline groundwater into square fields and the crystals evaporate out.
